The Trees are Afire!

fall colors on a mountainside

Autumn is full swing! Some of the loveliest weather and colors of the year is here. I wanted to share one of my earlier poems written back in 2017 about fall, as well as some photos of autumn to go with it. I hope you enjoy it.

The trees are afire, O God,
The trees are afire!
The rising flame consumes summer’s green:
In a breadth, it is wisped away.
The flame advents shyly,
but its temerity swiftly courses
O’er the whole landscape,
Filling it with vivid color.
The eye is fix’d in a dazed stupor.
No dross remains;
All transient life flees
The infectious conflagration.
Cooling torrents rush to quench the fire –
Alas! It grows brighter, fiercer still!

Soon there is silence, and all is quiet.
The scene is desolate – not a patch of life is left.
Yet we remain below, enraptured, as the ashes
Fall around us in crispy smolders.
We are consumed, O God, in the fire!
But how can we save ourselves
When the tress are afire?
O God, Your trees are afire!
